Getting rid of long-tailed silverfish is somewhat expensive, depending on whether you use the help of a professional or whether you try to manage yourself with commercial pesticides. In this article, you get a little picture of the costs that the process brings.
Our criteria was to find a company specialized in pest control that operates in a wide area and are, so to speak, on the cutting edge of the pesticides they use. I had collected so much information before calling the pest control that I knew long-tailed silverfish are a difficult insect to get rid of. In addition, the long-tailed silverfish is also a relatively new acquaintance and an insect that is recognized as its own species only a short time ago. There has been speculation that the species has existed in our country for a long time, but we have not been able to distinguish it from the silverfish we know.
For the financial side, this whole thing is somewhat felt, but it is not about insurmountable sums at all. The sellers of our apartment agreed to offer the first 2 poisonings, and for this a big thank you to our sellers. In the third and fourth poisoning, we paid the bills ourselves.
Additional costs were brought about by various accessories, for example vacuum cleaner bags, of which several were used in the beginning. In addition, detergents and our own pesticides significantly lighten the purse. To reiterate, our population of long-tailed silverfish was really large that the use of our own pesticides in addition to a professional poisoner seemed natural and even necessary, at least in the beginning when there were so many of them. We believe that our own actions definitely accelerated this process of getting rid of long-tailed silverfish. I think we could use several bottles of insecticide, but that also depends so much on the target and the scope of the situation. Pesticide spray that we used costs approx. 15 dollars, depending on the place of purchase.
One poisoning costs about 250 dollars, so nothing is impossible. Of course, this is a lot of money to invest at once, but it is absolutely worthwhile. Different companies may also have different payment options. It’s good to remember that you get a household deduction for a pest control visit, so the overall costs won’t be that high.

All this hassle is worth it though, because I can’t imagine living in harmony with the ever-increasing number of long-tailed silverfish, which are harmless in themselves. And I don’t want to live with other insects indoors either. A few spiders here and there doesn’t bother me, but these crawling insects are not my thing. Outdoor spaces are a separate matter, and I am aware of the usefulness of the insect world and its place in our ecosystem.
I also noticed that the recommendation for the number of poisonings varied slightly. We were told that two times may well be enough, and somewhere it was said that up to four poisonings may be required. So we thought we’d hope for the best, but we were prepared to go with four if necessary, depending on the size of the problem. It was clear from the beginning that we would do everything a little bit on the safe side. We thought that it is a tough species, however, so you could assume that it is not so easy to leave the place where it has properly settled as a house.
It is known that long-tailed silverfish can also live without eating for quite a long time, so if they do not come to the poisoned areas during the time when the poison is “in effect”, the survival percentages are quite high. That’s why successive multiple poisonings produce the desired result much more reliably.

It is also worth paying attention to the fact that these bugs move from one house to another quite smoothly. You can easily bring them home from houses infected with long-tailed silverfish if you are not aware of it. In other words, they can sneak into their new home and surroundings with your bags, belongings, moving load, etc. I guess this is how these generally spread in our society.
All in all, I think that the most stress-free way to get rid of these is with the help of a professional, but I don’t know if it’s the most cost-effective. With DIY attitude you might save money, but some individuals might survive your measures. It means that a new long-tailed silverfish revolution will start again.
